Jack glanced up as Myra walked into the office. âIs Sergeant Fuller not with you?â
âHe went straight to the canteen. We missed lunch.â
âDidnât you want something?â
Myra shook her head. âIâve got to watch my waistline,â she said.
âHow did you get on at the golf course?â
âIt was pretty much a waste of time. No one had a round booked that day. We checked out the golf cart but there was nothing in the way of fingerprints. He either wiped it down or wore gloves. Either way he left us no clues.â
âAnd no one else saw him take it and drive halfway across the links?â
âI think heâs bloody lucky, excuse my French,â Myra said.
âEither that, or he knows the golf course well enough to know that he wouldnât be observed.â
Myra sat down at the desk. âSo do you think weâre looking for a golfer, someone who uses the course a lot?â
âWe could be,â Jack said. âWhat I do think is that weâre not having an awful lot of luck with this case. Our killer seems to be invisible.â
âWeâll catch him, sir. He has to make a mistake sooner or later.â
âLetâs just hope itâs sooner, before he gets the chance to kill again.â He stood up from the desk and went across to the notice board and stared at the photos of Frances Anderton and Sandra Duncan. Myra came up beside him.
âWhy these two girls, Myra?â Jack said. âWhereâs the link?â
Myra stared at the photographs and considered Jackâs questions. âTheyâre different ages, from different social classes, and totally different in looks.â She shrugged. âIt beats me.â
âThen forget about looking at the differences. What did the two girls have in common?â
Myra pondered this for a moment. âWell, neither of the girls was very worldly wise. Frances was very young and, by all accounts, quite naïve, and Sandra came from a very sheltered background, dominated by the church and her parents, and, by all accounts, a wallflower.â
âAs you say, neither of them were worldly wise, but both of them, I suspect, could be sweet talked by, say, an older, smooth-talking man. Tim Fellowes is a bit of a smooth talker. I wouldnât have thought heâd find it difficult to charm Sandra Duncan, and Frances Anderton came into contact with her sisterâs boyfriend, Adam Channing, a college lecturer who, again, is quite a bit older, and is obviously a smooth enough operator to ensnare Fiona Anderton who, believe me, is nobodyâs fool. Both men seem to have a penchant for much younger women.â
âBut you said that Channing didnât fit the description of our park keeper.â
âYes, and Fellowes claims that his relationship with Sandra was strictly business, even though I find it unlikely that a solicitor would have an argument with a client on a bench in a public park. But he was out of the country when Sandra Duncan went missing.â
âSo that rules them out,â Myra said. She wasnât sure where her boss was going with this train of thought. The conversation sheâd had with Eddie Fuller today had been surprisingly illuminating in regards to Jack Callum.
